Who this helps
Pharmacy fees and generic savings matter most when you pay out of pocket.
65 or older on Ontario Drug BenefitThe province pays most drug costs, but chain dispensing fees and 90-day supplies still affect what you pay.
Maybe Trillium (age 25–64)High prescription spending compared with the 4% income deductible. See if the program may be worth exploring.
Example scenario
Lipitor and Synthroid at Shoppers Drug Mart, no insurance, 12 pickups per year for each drug. A typical result: roughly $180 or more per year in avoidable dispensing fees alone, plus possible savings if you switch Lipitor to a lower-cost interchangeable statin.

Frequently asked questions
What does this Ontario prescription savings calculator do?
You enter up to five medications and answer a few questions about your coverage. We estimate whether you may be paying extra each year on pharmacy dispensing fees, brand-name drugs when a lower-cost interchangeable version exists, and provincial programs such as Trillium or Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) for people 65 and older.
Is this a pharmacy or a live price quote?
No. We are an independent calculator, not a pharmacy. Estimates use Ontario's public drug list and typical dispensing fees. Always call your pharmacy to confirm your actual price before switching.
What is a dispensing fee?
Every time you pick up a prescription, the pharmacy charges a separate fee to prepare and hand you the medication, on top of the drug price. Fees vary by chain. Costco is often about $4.50 per pickup; Shoppers and Rexall are often about $12. See our Ontario dispensing fees guide for a full table.
What is the Trillium Drug Program deductible?
For eligible Ontario residents aged 25 to 64 without drug insurance, Trillium uses a deductible of roughly 4% of household net income per year before program support applies. Our calculator compares that to your estimated prescription spending when you choose the Trillium option.
Should I switch from a brand-name drug to a generic in Ontario?
When drugs are listed as interchangeable on the Ontario Drug Benefit formulary, a lower-cost version may save money on the medication itself. Ask your pharmacist or doctor first, especially for drugs where switching needs medical judgment (for example some thyroid medications).
Who is this for?
Ontario adults with multiple recurring prescriptions: people without insurance or with limited coverage, seniors on Ontario Drug Benefit who still pay chain pharmacy fees, and working-age residents with high prescription costs who may qualify for Trillium.
